Self-contained luminaires offer a simple solution for emergency lighting requirements when installed correctly. A bulkhead style fitting is very common and is cheaper to replace than repair these days. However, decorative or combined mains/emergency fittings also exist and these can be very expensive to replace.

For several years now there has been an influx of low cost bulkhead luminaires onto the market. These may be adequate for shop fitting or smaller projects but may not be the best solution for more industrial or high profile projects.
